South Dakota Department of Health Releases Latest Influenza and COVID-19 Updates
The South Dakota Department of Health has begun providing weekly updates on the status of influenza and COVID-19 cases as we enter the late fall and winter months. As of the latest update on October 25, 2022, there have been a total of 25 flu cases reported, resulting in one hospitalization.
In addition to the flu cases, South Dakota has also seen a surge in COVID-19 cases during the first 25 days of October. As of October 25, there have been a staggering 1,429 confirmed COVID-19 cases, with 77 individuals requiring hospitalization. Unfortunately, there has been one reported death due to COVID-19. The deceased was a woman in the 65+ age range, reminding us of the importance of protecting our vulnerable populations.
To keep the public informed about the spread of both influenza and COVID-19, the South Dakota Department of Health has created interactive dashboards where individuals can track the latest data. These dashboards provide comprehensive information on the number of cases, hospitalizations, and deaths related to both illnesses.
Moving forward, the South Dakota Department of Health will continue to publish weekly updates on Wednesdays. This regular communication will help the public stay informed about the prevalence of these viruses and take appropriate precautions to safeguard their health.
Reflecting on the previous flu season (2022-2023), South Dakota saw a total of 16,025 flu cases, resulting in 727 hospitalizations, and tragically, 39 deaths. On the other hand, the 2022-23 COVID-19 season was even more severe, with 25,606 confirmed cases, 1,236 hospitalizations, and a devastating 192 deaths.
As the new flu season unfolds, it is more important than ever to prioritize preventative measures such as getting vaccinated, practicing good hand hygiene, and wearing masks in crowded areas. Similarly, adhering to public health guidelines, including getting vaccinated against COVID-19, wearing masks indoors, and practicing social distancing, can help minimize the spread of the virus.
By staying informed and taking necessary precautions, we can work together to protect ourselves and our communities from the ongoing threat of influenza and COVID-19.
