President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, accompanied by Secretary of Veterans’ Affairs Denis McDonough and top military officials, delivered a heartfelt speech on Veterans Day, honoring the brave men and women who have served in the military. In his address, Biden referred to veterans as the “steel spine” of the nation, highlighting their strength and resilience. He also praised their families, who he called the “courageous heart” of America, acknowledging the sacrifices they have made to support their loved ones.
While the United States currently does not have troops on the ground in Ukraine or Gaza, Biden reiterated the country’s commitment to providing significant military aid and security assistance to Ukraine, which is engaged in a conflict with Russia, and to Israel, which is in conflict with Hamas.
Biden also took the opportunity to shed light on the PACT Act (Protecting America’s Clean Air for Veterans and their Families), a legislation that expands healthcare access for veterans who have been exposed to toxic chemicals during their service. This act will not only support veterans, but also their families who may have also been affected by these toxic exposures.
Under the PACT Act, all veterans who were exposed to toxins while serving in conflicts covered by the legislation will be eligible to enroll in VA healthcare starting in March 2024. This crucial measure aims to ensure that veterans receive the medical attention they need and deserve, acknowledging the long-term health effects that could arise from their service.
In a bid to raise awareness about the PACT Act, the Biden-Harris campaign aired a powerful TV ad centered around the legislation on Veterans Day. The ad highlighted the importance of passing this act to protect and support veterans and their families.
The speech took on a personal note when Biden mentioned his son, Beau Biden, who served in Iraq and tragically passed away from brain cancer after being exposed to burn pits. Biden expressed his immense pride in Beau’s military service, recounting his son’s awards and decorations.
Biden concluded his address by emphasizing the significance of preserving the “light of liberty” and urged everyone to contribute to its preservation. Acknowledging the sacrifice and service of veterans, he reiterated the importance of ensuring their well-being, both physical and mental, and urged the nation to come together and support those who have bravely defended the country.
