Israel’s President Isaac Herzog Opposes Two-State Solution Following Gaza War
In the wake of the recent war in Gaza, Israel’s President Isaac Herzog has publicly voiced his opposition to a two-state solution. In an interview, Herzog emphasized the need to address the emotional trauma and sense of security felt by the Israeli people before discussing the possibility of a Palestinian state.
Herzog’s statements come at a crucial time, ahead of his upcoming meeting with White House national security adviser, Jake Sullivan. The Biden administration has been advocating for renewed efforts to restart negotiations for a Palestinian state alongside Israel, under the leadership of the Palestinian Authority.
Highlighting the recent attack by Hamas on October 7, Herzog argued that the nation is still reeling from the trauma and mourning resulting from this act of terror. He expressed optimism that the military campaign in the northern part of Gaza is reaching its conclusion, but stressed the importance of completely eradicating Hamas for the campaign to end in the south.
Beyond the conflict in Gaza, Herzog also raised concerns about the situation in Yemen. He expressed his support for a U.S.-led coalition to combat the Houthi rebels and protect the Red Sea. Herzog called upon all nations to join this coalition and make it clear that the actions of the Houthi rebels are unacceptable and will not be tolerated.
These latest remarks from President Herzog indicate a shift in Israel’s stance towards a two-state solution. The emotional toll and sense of insecurity felt by the Israeli people following the war in Gaza have taken priority for Herzog. It remains to be seen how this will impact future negotiations and the prospects for peace in the region.
