Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis Apologize for Supporting Convicted Rapist Danny Masterson
In a recent turn of events, Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis have issued a public apology for their character letters supporting their former co-star on “That ’70s Show,” Danny Masterson, who was recently sentenced to 30 years to life in prison for two counts of forcible rape.
During Masterson’s sentencing hearing, emotional victim impact statements were provided by three Jane Does involved in the case. Kutcher and Kunis, along with several others, including Masterson’s wife, mother, and co-stars from the hit show, had written character letters asking for leniency. However, their support sparked significant online backlash.
Jane Doe No. 2, one of the victims, openly criticized Kutcher and Kunis for submitting the letters after reading the impactful testimonies of the women. Similarly, Jane Doe No. 3 went a step further and claimed that Kutcher himself is “just as sick” as Masterson.
Responding to the criticism, Kutcher and Kunis released a video message addressing the situation. They explained that they were asked to write character letters by Masterson’s family, who wanted to depict the person they had known for 25 years. The actors clarified that their intent was never to undermine the victims’ testimony or question the judicial system.
It is worth noting that other individuals, including Masterson’s wife, mother, and co-stars from “That ’70s Show,” also provided character letters.
Masterson’s attorney continues to maintain his innocence, stating that the verdicts are not supported by the evidence. The actor was found guilty in May after a mistrial in November 2022, with one count being dismissed. The alleged attacks occurred between 2001 and 2003, during the time the popular sitcom was still on the air.
The women who made the accusations initially hesitated to report to law enforcement due to teachings of the Church of Scientology, an organization to which all parties involved belonged. However, the Church of Scientology denies having policies discouraging reporting to law enforcement.
In their video message, Kutcher and Kunis emphasized their historical support for victims and expressed their sincerest apologies for any pain caused. They concluded by stating that they stand by all survivors of sexual assault and will continue to educate themselves and work towards creating a safer environment for all.
This recent controversy involving Kutcher and Kunis has sparked conversations about the responsibility of celebrities in supporting individuals convicted of serious crimes and the importance of believing and supporting survivors of sexual assault.
