This setback left many actors disillusioned, especially after witnessing the successful resolution of the Writers Guild of America’s recent agreement with Hollywood studios. However, the deadlock between SAG-AFTRA and the studios only further solidified the resolve of the striking actors.
According to the SAG-AFTRA negotiating committee, Hollywood executives failed to make substantial concessions on critical issues and refrained from countering their latest package. Conversely, the studios argue that an insurmountable divide had emerged between the two parties, rendering further discussions unproductive.
The ongoing strike, now in its ninetieth day, has intensified frustrations amongst union members who are eagerly awaiting a long-overdue fair deal. The strike has also garnered support for the workers in below-the-line positions who play a vital role in the entertainment industry.
During the negotiations, SAG-AFTRA presented a compromise package to modify their streaming revenue share proposal from a percentage to a subscriber-based model. Regrettably, the studios rejected the proposal, citing concerns of economic burden.
SAG-AFTRA insists that the actors’ proposal, which would cost companies a mere 57 cents per subscriber annually – less than the price of a postage stamp – is both reasonable and affordable. However, Hollywood executives claim that the proposal would amass a cost exceeding $800 million, while SAG-AFTRA asserts that it would amount to $500 million.
Contentious issues such as protecting actors from artificial intelligence (AI) advancements and ensuring wage increases that keep pace with inflation further fueled the impasse. Accusations have been leveled against the studios for employing tactics to divide union members and discourage solidarity.
The protracted strike has precipitated uncertainty among actors regarding their future with streaming platforms and has exerted significant financial strain on entertainment crews. Prompted by these concerns, labor unions within the industry have issued a statement urging studios and streaming companies to promptly resume negotiations and address the pressing needs of performers.
As the strike steadily approaches the 100-day mark, actors remain firmly committed to their cause and are resolute in their demand for clear boundaries and equitable contracts.
