New York State Takes Steps to Safeguard Schools as Students Return Amidst Rising COVID-19 Cases
As students across New York State prepare to return to school, the state government is stepping up its efforts to ensure a safe and healthy learning environment. In response to the emergence of the concerning BA.2.86 variant of COVID-19 and an increase in cases and hospitalizations over the summer, the state is now providing rapid test kits and masks to school districts and BOCES (Boards of Cooperative Educational Services) programs upon request.
Recognizing the need for proactive measures to protect students, Governor Hochul and the New York State Department of Health have advised schools to review the current CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) school guidance for COVID-19 prevention. They further encourage schools to collaborate with local health departments to implement effective public health measures.
To ensure that schools have the necessary resources to tackle the challenges posed by the BA.2.86 variant and the ongoing pandemic, the state will conduct outreach to determine the needs of each school district and BOCES program for test kits and masks. Once the requests are submitted, New York State will promptly deliver the requested tests and N-95 and KN-95 masks to each BOCES for distribution to school districts.
In addition to providing testing and protective equipment, the CDC recommends that schools promote vaccination and testing, encourage sick individuals to stay home, optimize ventilation, maintain improvements to indoor air quality, and teach proper handwashing and hygiene practices. Schools experiencing outbreaks are advised to work closely with their local health department for timely response and support.
The responsibility for monitoring the situation and tracking new variants, including the BA.2.86 variant, falls on the New York State Department of Health and the Wadsworth Center. These agencies are committed to ensuring the safety of New Yorkers by staying vigilant and taking prompt action to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.
As the school year begins, the state’s proactive approach in providing resources and guidance demonstrates its commitment to safeguarding the well-being of students and educators across New York. With the support of the government and adherence to public health measures, schools can navigate the challenges of the ongoing pandemic and strive for a safe and successful academic year.
In these challenging times, the collective efforts of the state, local health departments, schools, and the public are crucial in minimizing the impact of COVID-19 and protecting the health of New Yorkers.
