EU Staff Criticize European Commission President’s ‘Unconditional Support’ of Israel
In a surprising turn of events, hundreds of EU staff members working around the world have expressed their discontent with the European Commission’s President, Ursula von der Leyen, for her unwavering support of Israel amid the recent conflict with Palestine. A three-page letter, detailing their concerns, was recently sent to von der Leyen’s office, with copies also distributed to EU delegations worldwide.
Over 850 staff members have already signed the letter, which condemns the terrorist attacks carried out by Hamas, but also expresses their dismay at the disproportionate response and actions of the Israeli government. The signatories are critical of the European Commission’s stance, labeling it as promoting what they describe as European cacophony.
The letter also highlights the staff members’ concerns about the ongoing massacre of civilians in the Gaza Strip, accusing the European Commission of not taking sufficient action to address this issue. Interestingly, the Commission faced criticism from other EU institutions and divisions within its own executive when it initially announced plans to reduce aid to Palestinians. It eventually had to backtrack on this decision due to the backlash it received.
Some EU officials and member states have joined the voices of dissent, arguing that von der Leyen should have made it clear that the EU expects Israel to adhere to international humanitarian law. The staff members behind the letter go further, stating that they no longer recognize European values in the Commission’s current stance.
In their letter, the signatories emphasize the urgent need for a ceasefire and the protection of civilian lives. They warn that the European Union risks losing credibility if it continues to support Israel unconditionally in the face of mounting criticism.
The situation remains highly charged, with the European Commission now facing significant pressure to address the concerns raised by its own staff members. As the conflict between Israel and Palestine continues, the world watches to see how the European Commission will respond and whether it will adjust its position in the coming days and weeks.
