U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin has been hospitalized since the beginning of the new year, according to sources from the Pentagon. The officials have chosen not to disclose the reason behind Austin’s hospitalization, leaving the public intrigued.
It has been revealed that the Secretary of Defense was admitted to the renowned Walter Reed National Military Medical Center to address complications arising from an elective medical procedure. This procedure had been undertaken on December 22, 2023, while Austin was on leave. He returned home the following day, seemingly in good health.
However, on the first day of the new year, Austin began experiencing severe pain, prompting his immediate return to Walter Reed and subsequent admission to the intensive care unit (ICU). The decision to keep him in the ICU is based on the need for urgent medical attention as well as considerations of privacy and hospital space.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his condition, Pentagon press secretary Major General Pat Ryder has been unable to provide additional information due to privacy concerns. Acknowledging the public’s concern, Ryders expressed that Austin’s ailments would remain undisclosed for the sake of his privacy.
Remarkably, despite being in the hospital, Secretary Austin has resumed his duties. He is reportedly recovering well and remains in high spirits. Austin has been actively involved in his role, receiving operational updates and offering crucial guidance to his team. Furthermore, he spoke with President Biden on Saturday and has kept in touch with other key officials.
At present, there is no definitive timeline for Austin’s release from the hospital. Additionally, it remains unclear whether he will be able to conduct in-person press briefings in the upcoming week. As the situation unfolds, updates will be provided to ensure the public is kept informed about the Secretary of Defense’s progress and forthcoming plans.
