Title: Global Measles Threat Grows as Unvaccinated Children Remain at Risk
Subtitle: Measles Cases Surpass 9 Million as Deaths Spike by 43% Compared to Last Year
The global threat of measles continues to escalate as millions of children remain unvaccinated, according to a warning issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In 2022 alone, measles cases have risen by 18%, with deaths increasing by a staggering 43% in comparison to 2021.
With an estimated 9 million reported cases and 136,000 deaths, predominantly affecting children, measles is becoming an increasingly significant public health concern. Disturbingly, 37 countries experienced large or disruptive measles outbreaks in 2022, a significant increase from the 22 countries impacted in the previous year.
Health officials are not surprised by the surge in outbreaks and fatalities, pointing to declining vaccination rates as a major contributing factor. Despite a modest uptick in global vaccination coverage this year, approximately 33 million children were still not immunized against measles.
The global vaccine coverage rate for the first dose currently stands at 83%, while coverage for the crucial second dose is at a worrisome 74%, well below the recommended 95% threshold. The lowest vaccination rates are observed in low-income countries, where the risk of death from measles is the highest, with only 66% vaccine coverage.
Experts are particularly concerned about the lack of recovery in measles vaccine coverage among low-income countries following the disruptions caused by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
In response to these alarming statistics, calls are being made for immediate and focused efforts to prevent further measles outbreaks and deaths. Global stakeholders are urged to collaborate and help countries reach their most vulnerable communities, ensuring all children are vaccinated against measles and other vaccine-preventable diseases.
Investment in enhanced surveillance systems and outbreak response capacity is deemed crucial in order to halt the spread of measles. To address this pressing issue, the Measles & Rubella Partnership (M&RP), consisting of the CDC, World Health Organization (WHO), and other organizations, is striving to eradicate both measles and rubella, aiming to create a world free from these diseases.
As the global measles threat continues to intensify, urgent action is required to safeguard children’s health and prevent further loss of life. It is the collective responsibility of individuals, communities, and governments to prioritize measles immunization and ensure the well-being of future generations.
